The big question basketball fans in New Orleans are asking now is, what are the Pelicans playoff chances? Last week, Adam Silver, the NBA Commissioner, announced July 31st as a potential NBA restart date. I don’t know who the NBA’s Board of Governors are and I’m not sure of anyone who does, but everything seems to be in their hands. Tomorrow, the league’s Board of Governors are expected to vote on and approve a plan that will include 22 NBA teams restarting play on July 31st in Disney World.
NBA Restart Format
Good news for Pelicans fans, the Pelicans are expected to be one of the 22 teams that will be included in the NBA’s restart. Out of the 22 teams, 13 teams are from the western conference and 9 are from the eastern conference. These 22 teams will play eight regular season games to determine who makes the playoffs. After the eight regular season games, if the ninth seed is within four games of the eighth seed, then the eighth and ninth seed will be included in a play in tournament for the final playoff spot. It will be double elimination for the eighth seed and single elimination for ninth seed.
What Are The Pelicans Playoff Chances?
New Orleans is currently the 10th seed, just behind Portland, in the west and are 3.5 games behind the eighth seed. To keep the Pelicans playoff chances alive, they will have to play well in the eight regular season games. Being 3.5 games behind Memphis with only eight games to play, the eighth seed is likely out of reach for the Pels. Their only hope is beating out Portland for the ninth seed. Hypothetically speaking, If the Pelicans beat out Portland, then they will likely be within four games of the Memphis Grizzlies. This will give them a shot at the final playoff spot. The Pelicans would have to beat the Grizzlies twice to win the final playoff spot. If the Pelicans lose once to the Grizzlies, then the Pelicans would be eliminated.
It’s going to be a tough road battling Portland and Damian Lillard for the ninth seed. Sacramento has the same record as the Pels and they are certainly in the mix. You can’t forget about the Spurs. They always find a way to make the playoffs. Even if the Pelicans can get a hold of the ninth seed they still have to beat the eighth seed twice. Although the Pelicans playoff chances may appear to be slim, it’s good to know they have a shot.
