July 13th, it was announced that Kara Lawson was headed to the Blue Devils. She will be the first African American woman’s basketball Head Coach in Duke’s history. Lawson has been an assistant on the Boston Celtics the past 19-20 season. Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens saw her talent and decided to bring her in. Lawson was drafted fifth overall in the 2003 draft to the Detroit Shock. A few days later she was traded to the Sacramento Monarchs. She had a 12 year career and was a stud throughout. She has a great eye for the game and brings a lot to the table for the Blue Devils. Now I don’t see them really putting up too much of a fit against someone like UCONN but still, it will be interesting to see what Lawson can bring to the Head Coach position.
From destroying on the floor for Tennessee Volunteers, killing it at Sacramento and Connecticut, then to her many years covering the sport for ESPN. Kara Lawson is a great decision for this job. Her players gave an awesome send off. Rocking her new team’s colors, the players and coaches let her know how much she meant to them, even in that one year. I don’t know if we are getting college sports this year but I have always enjoyed watching women’s college ball. Those ladies are monsters on the court!
