The MMA world got rocked with some devastating news this morning. Gilbert Burns tested positive for COVID-19. Burns was set to headline UFC 251 with Kamaru Usman on fight island. Coming off of an impressive win against the now clearly washed up, Tyron Woodley, Burns was clearly riding that momentum. Neither fighter was on the charter flight to Abu Dhabi and rescheduling is likely.
What Happens Next?
This might be a blessing in disguise for Gilbert Burns. He has already fought twice this year and was now being thrust into a title fight against one of the most dangerous guys in the sport. Now he can pump the brakes, get healthy and come back ready to go in a few months. But what about fight island? we had been hearing so much about this island, and then bam! Three title fights on one card. It was too good to be true so the CoronaVirus had to step in and Gilbert Burns tested positive. I wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him fight again this year. In the meantime, I know of a certain Irishman who stays ready and is fighting at 170 now. Better back up the brinks truck, Dana.
