Drew Brees had an interview with a Yahoo Finance employee today. In the interview he reiterated his stance on how he will “never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America”. I want to start this off by saying, Drew Brees has more character and integrity than anyone of you dragging him through the mud on social media. What he has done for the city of New Orleans is second to none, and I’m strictly referring to what he has done off of the field. With that being said, I feel like his statement today was rather tone deaf.
What Did He Say And What Did He Mean?
Drew Brees said he will “never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America”. This does not mean that he is a racist. If you honestly think that he is a racist, then you are a complete moron. He voiced his opinion on a matter that is personal to him, much like what is going on in the world today. Everything is “you are all the way with us, or all the way against us”, and that is a problem. Should he have said this? In my opinion, no. You have a locker room full of teammates that look up to you, and they are struggling right now. Young people who are angry and for good reason.
Drew Brees is not a bad person. In fact, he is about as good of a person that you can be. He picked a very poor time to voice his opinion, this doesn’t make him a monster. He has earned the chance to make amends with his teammates and explain himself, if he so chooses. Just for the record, I know that Kaepernick kneeling was not meant to disrespect the flag or the veterans. In fact, he was inspired to kneel during the anthem by Nate Boyer, ex-Green Beret and NFL player. The military men and woman fight for us so we have the freedom to make these statements. This is my personal opinion on the matter and reasons like this are why I started The Neutral Ground Sports Network. One statement does not define a man.
