DraftKings Sportsbook In Wrigley Field

Sportsbook In Wrigley Field

The Chicago Cubs announced a partnership with DraftKings that will include putting a sportsbook in Wrigley Field. This is HUGE. Can you imagine little Johnny waiting outside the sportsbook for the first three innings while grandpa is trying to live bet the game? Grandpa hits big on a prop bet and all he buys little Johnny is a fricking hotdog.

What About The Black Sox?

This seems like a move the White Sox would make, considering their history. What’s the amount of time it takes baseball to forget a gambling scandal? Apparently, 101 years. Eight Chicago White Sox players were accused of throwing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for money.

Fixing a baseball game, how unamerican. This infamously became known as The Black Sox Scandal. Let’s be honest, this is definitely why the White Sox and Guaranteed Rate Field weren’t considered for hosting the sportsbook. All eight players accused of fixing the World Series were permanently banned from professional baseball. Baseball distanced itself from gambling until now.

What A Sportsbook In Wrigley Field Means for Sports Betting

Baseball isn’t the only one. In the past, most professional sports leagues distanced themselves from sports gambling. Sports gambling was seen as means of corrupting the game, but things are changing. Sports betting is now legal in 22 states. Ultimately, professional sports are a form of entertainment. Gambling is a form of adult entertainment. When you combine the two that’s double the entertainment.

The XFL realized this. They put the spreads next to the score of the game. College Gameday has a segment called “Bears Bank”, where Chris Fallica, “The Bear”, gives his best bets for college football games. Capital One Arena, home to the Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals, was the first professional sports venue to add a sportsbook. In July, they partnered with William Hill to transform their box office into a sportsbook. Now with the Chicago Cubs partnering with DraftKings to put a sportsbook in Wrigley Field, we will see more professional sports teams do the same. This is a new age of sports and betting is a big part of it. There’s nothing more entertaining than having money on a game that’s going down to the wire.
