Brick’s Bonus Bets: CFB Week 3 Recap

Last week we had UL -16 and Notre Dame 1H -14.

UL -16: UL stumbled a bit early against a good football team in Georgia State. The Ragin’ Cajuns didn’t get the rushing attack going like I thought they would. It didn’t come until late in the game. Give credit to Georgia State, they started fast and got out to an early lead because of tough defense and good quarterback play. UL ultimately won the game in overtime but keep an eye on Georgia State later in the season.

Notre Dame 1H -14: Like I thought, Notre Dame was able to get off to a fast start against USF. They were able to mix in the play action with their strong rushing attack. The Irish were up 35-0 at half time and they eventually won the game 52-0.

Brick’s Bonus Bets #1: #22 Army @ #14 Cincinnati (-13, O/U 45) – 2:30 PM CST, ESPN

Cincinnati has high hopes for this season and for good reason. Coming off of an 11 win season, Cincinnati looks to build off of last year’s success. Cincinnati’s defense played its best in big moments and QB Desmond Ridder has a good arm and is able to make plays with his legs. However, Ridder struggled to throw the ball against good defenses a season ago. A lot like Army, Cincinnati is going to try to control the clock.

Everybody knows Army, they run the ball damn near every play. Through two games this season, Army has thrown the ball nine times only completing three of them. They don’t throw the ball because they don’t need to. This year, Army is averaging 389 rushing yards per game, converting an astonishing 71% of their third downs and 80% of their fourth downs.

This is going to be a physical football game. In order for Army to have a chance at winning, they’re going to have to get out to a fast start. Last week against Austin Peay, Cincinnati gave up 102 yards rushing (6.38 avg) on first downs. I expect Army to be able to take advantage against a slight weakness at linebacker for Cincinnati. Army has a really nice blend of power and speed. I expect the speed to be a problem for Cincinnati early. I think there is a good chance that Army has the lead at halftime.
