This is the first week of Brick’s Bonus Bets. Brick’s Bonus Bets is a series of blogs in which I, Nick Von Brick, will give out bets that aren’t mentioned in the Big Easy Bets podcast.
Two of the bets that I gave out on Big Easy Bets Episode #54 (CFB Week 3 / NFL Week 2) have been canceled. I gave out Georgia Southern +5.5 against FAU. Last I checked on Friday, Vegas had Georgia Southern as 3-point favorites. Unfortunately, this game has been postponed due a number of FAU’s players testing positive for COVID-19. Another game I picked was Houston @ Baylor. I was taking Baylor -3.5. This game was postponed as well.
Bricks Bonus Bets #1: #19 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (-16, O/U 58) @ Georgia State – 11:00 AM CT, ESPN2
Last week I was big on Iowa State. The Ragin’ Cajuns marched into Ames, Iowa and upset the Cyclones 31-14. Louisiana only totaled 272 yards of offense in the upset win. They returned a kick and a punt for touchdowns. For the most part, UL’s offense was held in check by a good Iowa State defense. Then with two minutes left in the third quarter, Levi Lewis connected with Peter LeBlanc for a 78-yard bomb. UL also put together a touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter. It was an 11-play drive that took seven minutes off the clock, UL ran the ball every play.
What really surprised me was how well UL’s defense played. After a big win last week, a lot of people think UL could be overconfident. I don’t see it.
Georgia Southern was a team that allowed 218 rushing yards a game last year. Last year UL averaged 257 rushing yards a game. After getting off to a slow start against Iowa State, the rushing attack picked up in the fourth quarter. I expect UL to build off that fourth quarter success and run the football. Levi Lewis will take care of the ball and the Ragin’ Cajuns’ defense will play well for the second straight week. I think UL wins big!
Brick’s Pick: Ragin’ Cajuns -16
Brick’s Bonus Bets #2: USF @ #7 Notre Dame (-23.5, O/U 48) – 1:30 PM CT, USA
Last week, Notre Dame started off slow against Duke. They ran the ball 17 times in the first half only totaling 44 yards (2.59 avg). However, In the second half they picked it up, Notre Dame ran the ball 25 times for 134 yards (5.36 avg). Running Back, Kyren Williams ended the game with 205 yards from scrimmage on his way to being named the ACC Running Back of the Week.
Last year, South Florida gave up 209 rushing yards per game. Last week, they gave up 200 rushing yards to The Citadel. Who? Exactly.
Notre Dame is going to build off the second half success last week and establish the run early against South Florida’s poor run defense. This will open up play action. Look for Ian Book to have success taking a couple shots down field. The Irish are going to get out to a big first half lead.
Brick’s Pick: Notre Dame -14 (1st Half)
